The Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial & Education Center in Kewaskum is dedicated to remembering the victims of September 11 by honoring those who responded, celebrating the resilience of our communities, and educating future generations. The Memorial gives special recognition to those with ties to Wisconsin.
The Memorial’s roots are deeply connected to the story of Andrea Haberman, a Kewaskum High School graduate who was killed in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Her story inspired a community effort to create a lasting place in Kewaskum to remember the victims, honor those who responded, and educate future generations.
Yes. At the heart of the Memorial is a 2,200-pound steel beam recovered from the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The beam arrived in Kewaskum in August 2014 and became a central element in the development of the Memorial.
The Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial & Education Center held its dedication and grand opening ceremony on June 13, 2021. Its history began years earlier, including the arrival of the World Trade Center steel beam in 2014.
The Memorial is operated by Kewaskum Remembers 9/11, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The organization is supported by volunteers and is dedicated to remembrance and education.
Education is an important part of the Memorial’s mission. Educational offerings include grade-specific lesson plans, field trip activities, additional learning resources, and opportunities for students to experience the Memorial and learn about September 11.
Plans have been announced for a new Museum and Community Center addition to the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial & Education Center. The planned 4,500-square-foot facility will provide indoor museum and learning space, a community room, educational exhibits, and other amenities. Construction is expected to begin once fundraising milestones are met.
