Honoring Memories Through Perseverance: Peter Rettler’s “30 Runs to Remember” – Day 2

December 3, 2023

Even as the snow falls on this snowy Wisconsin morning, Peter Rettler, dean of the West Bend campus of Moraine Park Technical College, continues his dedication to his streak. For nearly three decades, Peter has been running every single day. It started as a challenge to get in shape, but it has evolved into an initiative to raise funds for charities he cares about.

Rettler Run

For the past few years, Peter has been running to raise funds for the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial & Education Center. Each year on December 31st, he holds a fun run called the “Rettler Run” at the Kewaskum Annex. This year is no different, you can purchase entries for the Rettler Run here on the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial website.

However, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his streak, Pete is also hosting a daily event called  “30 Runs to Remember.” For 30 days of December, Pete is running to pay tribute to those affected by the September 11th terrorist attacks, including first responders and military personnel.

Honoring Daniel Song

Today, Pete’s run is dedicated to Daniel (Danny) Song. Danny’s journey began in Appleton, where he grew up after his family immigrated from South Korea. In his youth, Danny attended James Madison Middle School and Appleton East. In 1990, Danny moved to New York City, aspiring to a career in the financial world. His hard work and ambition led him to Cantor Fitzgerald, where he became a respected bond broker.

Tragically, Danny was among the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees who were killed in the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

His passing left a void in the hearts of those who knew him. Recently, his classmates from James Madison Middle School purchased a brick at the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial & Education Center in his honor.

Enchantment in the Park

Pete’s run today is sponsored by Enchantment in the Park, a magical drive-through holiday light show in West Bend. Enchantment in the Park is going on now through Christmas Eve from 5-9pm at Regner Park. Enchantment in the Park’s first ever Reindeer Run takes place on December 9th.
